SCALA turns Thirty!

... and releases a new CD!

I've been asked to play for the Songwriters, Composers And Lyricists Association (SCALA)'s thirtieth birthday party at the Wheatsheaf on Thursday 23rd November 2017.  Accompanying me will be Adrian Miller on keyboard and Clayton Werner on bass guitar.  Also on the bill on the night will be Courtney Robb and the Kelly Menhennett Trio, both worth seeing.

SCALA will also be releasing its 25th album and 18th in its CD compilation series on the night. I'm honoured to have a track included - Any Love Here.  I managed to get a sneaky photo of the CD cover!

It's Holiday Time

I had intended to release a full album of my songs this year but I'm slow at recording and getting pneumonia in October stopped me in my tracks (literally!). So I can proffer only this as a Holiday offering. I wrote it on Christmas Day 1999 but it refers back to a Christmas in 1987 when my mother had just died, I'd had a pay cut at work and the hot water service and washing machine both conked out in the week before Christmas!  I hope that none of the things described in this song happen to you this holiday time!
Enjoy!

Someone on SCALA Brighter Than The Sun

My song Someone has been included on the 2015 SCALA Brighter Than The Sun album which was put together by Adrian Miller and released on 30th July.  This is SCALA's second double CD with a mix of award winning songs, live recordings and studio tracks recorded by SCALA members.

Happy Birthday Matilda

I wrote this song in 1999 when the neo-conservative Howard government was in power. It's sad that so much about the song is still relevant now that Australia has another neo-conservative government Happy Australia Day!

One of my songs on latest SCALA CD

I'm pleased to have my song, That's How It Ended, on the latest (15th) SCALA Photographs And Memories double CD album.  This is a 36 track album containing winning songs from SCALA's 2012 and 2013 song competitions plus a number of live tracks from SCALA's venue and other contributed tracks.  I had a hand in the previous 14 CDs issued by SCALA so I know what effort has to be put into each one and this is a double CD so the effort would have had to be at least double.  Congratulations to Adrian Miller who coordinated the recording and compilation of the album and to everyone else involved in its production.  Copies of the double CD are available from SCALA and I believe that tracks will soon be available for download from the SCALA store.  In the meantime you can listen to my track on my ReverbNation site.

It was 20 years ago today ....

Robert Childs Elastic Band released the 17 track Revenge on this day in 1994.  I'd intended to issue my "follow up" album today but I'm way behind in my recording schedule (Revenge took 2 years to record!).  But you can still listen to Revenge online.  Oh, by the way, Happy Easter!

Long Live The People's Revolution

On this day, forty years ago, 11 September 1973, the democratically elected Chilean government of Salvador Allende was overthrown by a military coup led by General Pinochet.

According to Wikipedia:

'After General Pinochet assumed power, United States Secretary of State Henry Kissinger told President Richard Nixon that the U.S. "didn't do it," but "we helped them...created the conditions as great as possible." (referring to the coup itself).'

According to another Wikipedia article "Pinochet's government killed at least 3,197 people and tortured about 29,000." One of the many killed was singer/songwriter and theatre producer Victor Jara along with many other artists and musicians.

No matter what the opinion of the Allende government might be it's noteworthy that the "people's revolution" in Chile that brought him to power was a democratic election.

Now on ... TwitMusic!

It might not sound inspiring!  TwitMusic - music for twits?

Nope it's Twitter's solution for musicians who tweet a lot.

You can hear me twittering on my very own TwitMusic Page!

Ornithologists and other twitchers beware!

Arigato, xi xi, merci beaucoup, thanks!

Thanks so much to everyone who came along to the "Robert and Jane Childs Appreciation Night" last night at SCALA's new venue, The Colonel Light Hotel.  I was very appreciative of the numbers of people there.  It was fantastic to again hear Catherine Blanch and Vicki Bennett, as both have had quite a long break from performing, as well as The Miller Trio, Corey Stewart and Andy & Marta.

And thanks for all the song requests that I couldn't fulfil last night.  Here's the recorded version of Sugar Addict featuring the late Ren Forsaith doing fine work on drums.  Adrian Miller (keyboard) and George Will (bass) are also playing on this track.
